Not Every Research Compound Is a Peptide: Six Small Molecules, Explained

Browse any peptide catalogue and you’ll find compounds that aren’t peptides at all. Ours is no exception. Six of our capsule products are small molecules: they turn up in the same metabolic and neurological research as peptides, but chemically they are a different kind of thing.

Peptide or small molecule: the difference.

A peptide is a chain of amino acids, usually somewhere between two and fifty. Most research peptides weigh 1,000 to 5,000 g/mol, and stomach acid and enzymes break them down, which is why most are studied as dissolved powders.

A small molecule is a compact organic compound, typically under about 900 g/mol, built from a ring structure rather than a chain of amino acids. Many are stable enough to be studied orally. That is why every compound below comes as a capsule.

The six, at a glance.

Compound What it targets Approx. MW Format
BAM15 Mitochondrial uncoupler 340 g/mol 500 mcg capsules
SLU-PP-332 Estrogen-related receptors (ERRα/β/γ) 290 g/mol 250 mcg capsules
5-Amino-1MQ The enzyme NNMT 159 g/mol (cation) 50 mg capsules
Tesofensine Dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake 328 g/mol 500 mcg capsules
Orforglipron GLP-1 receptor 883 g/mol 6 mg capsules
Dihexa HGF / c-Met pathway 505 g/mol 10 mg capsules

BAM15.

A mitochondrial uncoupler: it lets protons leak back across the inner mitochondrial membrane, so cells burn more fuel for the same energy. Described in 2014, it stood out from older uncouplers such as DNP because, in cell studies, it left the plasma membrane polarised. Mouse studies in 2020 reported higher energy expenditure and less fat mass in diet-induced obesity. There are no human trials.

SLU-PP-332.

Developed at Saint Louis University, it switches on the estrogen-related receptors, which, despite the name, don’t respond to estrogen. They control genes for mitochondrial energy production in muscle. Mouse studies from 2023 onward describe it as an exercise mimetic.

5-Amino-1MQ.

A tiny molecule that blocks nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme abundant in fat tissue that consumes nicotinamide and the methyl donor SAM. A 2018 mouse study reported smaller fat cells and higher NAD+ inside them. It also comes in vials.

Tesofensine.

Developed by NeuroSearch for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, it blocks the reuptake of three neurotransmitters. Weight changes in those trials redirected research toward obesity, including a Phase 2 trial published in The Lancet in 2008.

Orforglipron.

A non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist, discovered by Chugai and developed by Eli Lilly. Because it isn’t a peptide, it can be studied orally without the absorption enhancers peptide tablets need. It is a natural comparator for the peptides in our GLP series.

Dihexa.

The borderline case: it is built from the peptide angiotensin IV but modified so heavily that it behaves like a small molecule. Rodent and cell studies link it to HGF and c-Met signalling and to the formation of new synapses.

Why they sit beside peptides.

Researchers studying metabolism, mitochondria and ageing tend to use peptides like MOTS-c and coenzymes like NAD+ alongside these small molecules. Keeping them together reflects how the research is done. Browse all capsules.

Documentation.

Every lot is third-party HPLC tested, with certificates in our COA library.

Questions.

Why do peptide shops sell small molecules?

Because the same researchers use both. These compounds appear in the same metabolic and neurological research as peptides.

Why are all six sold as capsules?

Small molecules are generally stable enough to be studied orally, unlike most peptides.

Is Dihexa a peptide?

It is derived from one, angiotensin IV, but so heavily modified that it behaves like a small molecule.

Are any of these approved for human use?

No. All six are sold for laboratory research only.

For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use. Nothing in this article is medical advice or guidance on human use.
