Description

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide whose code sits in mitochondrial DNA rather than in the cell nucleus. We supply it as a lyophilized powder in 10 mg and 40 mg vials, available analytical documentation is listed in the COA library.

Chemical identity & storage

Compound / component CAS number Molecular weight Specification status
MOTS-c 1627580-64-6 2174.64 g/mol
Formula: C101H152N28O22S2

Storage: Keep sealed lyophilized material cold and protected from light. For long-term storage, keep at -20°C or below. After reconstitution, store at 2–8°C and avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles.

What MOTS-c is.

The name is short for Mitochondrial Open reading frame of the Twelve S rRNA type-c. Changhan Lee and colleagues at the University of Southern California described it in 2015, after finding that a short sequence tucked inside the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene makes a working peptide.

The discovery put MOTS-c in a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides, and it changed how mitochondria are seen: as a source of signals, not only of energy.

What the research looks at.

Most MOTS-c work is about metabolism: the folate cycle and AMPK activation, insulin sensitivity in mice on high-fat diets, glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, and how levels shift with age and exercise. Under cellular stress it has been reported to move into the nucleus and affect gene expression. Nearly all of this comes from cell and animal studies.

Documentation.

Available analytical documentation is organized by compound, strength and format in the COA library. Do not treat a report as lot-specific unless a documented lot match is shown.

Handling.

Until it is opened, store the vial cold and dry, shielded from light. Most labs mix it with bacteriostatic water and refrigerate the solution once it has been reconstituted.

Questions.

What does MOTS-c stand for?

Mitochondrial Open reading frame of the Twelve S rRNA type-c.

Is this MOTS-c made in mitochondria?

The natural peptide is encoded in mitochondrial DNA. This product is a synthetic copy of that 16-residue sequence.

10 mg or 40 mg?

Both hold the same peptide. Choose by the scale of your study.
